Country: USA On November 19, 1989, Paul Caligiuri knocked in the 'shot heard around the world' to defeat Trinidad and Tobago 1 0 and earn the U.S. a berth in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy, their first trip to the finals in forty years, and in the process renew the U.S.' hopes of becoming a world soccer (football) power. The Red, White and Blue have qualified for each World Cup finals since then, advancing to the elimination round in 1994, when the United States hosted the tournament, and in 2002. The 2002 team shocked many by advancing to the quarterfinals, defeating Portugal and Mexico before losing to Germany 1 0. With a core of young players, Landon Donovan, John O'Brien, DaMarcus Beasley, Bobby Convey, replacing the old guard the U.S. is sure to build on their success and one day be crowned World Champions!
